Baby Proof Your House
When parents receive news that they will be bringing a new child into their home they should begin making plans to "baby proof" their home. This may sound like an odd term, but for those with children it makes perfect sense. When adults live together they don't really think about how their life style could be potentially deadly to a new baby. One example to consider may be the use of tobacco or smoking.
Parents that smoke should seriously consider altering their habit to protect the baby from second hand smoke. There are many other subtle forms of baby proofing that may not be so obvious. Some forms of baby proofing may actually be better termed toddler proofing. When the baby or toddler begins to crawl danger to the baby can be lurking around every corner.
Baby Proofing Ideas
For a newborn there are fewer items to be concerned with than for a toddler. Here are a few items to consider when baby proofing a baby's nursery. It is wise to make sure that there are no window blind cords close to the baby's bed. Another item to focus on is the baby's bedding. In some cases loose baby bedding may create a situation where the baby may suffocate, especially if the infant is laid face down in bed.
It is good to make sure that the slats on the baby crib are no wider than two and three eights inches apart. This will prevent the little one from getting its head through the slats. Make sure the changing table is sturdy and has a lip of at least 3 inches around the top. Always use a safety strap on the changing table. It is never safe to leave the infant on the changing table unattended.
When the infant begins to lift him or herself up on their knees remove all crib toys when the child is not being supervised. It is also important to remove any small items that the will fit in the babies mouth from their crib. These ideas are not conclusive, and there are many more ways to assure the safety of your new little one. Research on the Internet can produce a substantial list of baby proofing ideas. There are even check lists that can be downloaded.
Baby Proofing Grandma's House
Baby proofing the baby or toddler's home is simple compared to trying to bring Grandma's house into compliance. For many Grandmas it has been a while since they had a baby or a toddler around. They may be a little rusty when it comes to making things baby proof. Another problem that can play into this equation is the fact that Grandma doesn't have kids around all of the time. This might make it unpractical to put baby locks on all cabinets and doors. This can usually be worked around if Grandparents will give the little one their undivided attention while he or she is in their care.
