How To Help Your Children Get Along
The question from parents about how to help their children get along has been around since the beginning of time. Disagreements, arguments and even fighting is more or less common in most families in some degree. It seems that clashing personalities held in tight quarters whether in a family unit or any other relationship can become heated and if left unchecked, can get out of control.
With children, the best way to teach them a particular principle or behavior is, without question, by example. It starts with parents and their relationship in the marriage. Children in many cases will copy parental behavior. If parents are not considerate with each other, their children will notice and will repeat the behavior with their siblings, either positively or negatively.
Do Not Show Favoritism
It is important that parents never show favoritism to one child over another. Parents should act with complete unbiased feelings when deciding who is at fault within any given situation. Children should know that there are consequences for bad behavior but that they will be treated fairly. At times it may even seem hard not to show biased feelings towards one member of the family; however, it is not wise. Stay away from any show of favoritism towards any child in the family.
Reward Good Behavior
In addition, parents should seek to reward good behavior they see from their children. Parents should be quick to compliment good deeds and be consistent with their praise. This will encourage children to good behavior and can be a more powerful motivator than simply punishing bad behavior.
Build Family Unity
It is important for all members of the family to continually try to build family unity. One way to build family unity is very simple although not always easy to achieve. It would involve the family eating one meal a day together in one room where conversation among every member of the family can take place. By having a certain time set aside families can build loving, lasting relationships.
In addition, at least on a monthly basis, families should plan a fun activity or outing that everyone is involved in. It might be wise for the family to plan a different activity around an individual and their interests to ensure that each member of the family will not only enjoy the activity but will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and interests.
To teach and involve the rest of the family in what they do and who they are will help to breed mutual respect and appreciation among the entire family. Relationships within families are usually difficult. Parents should work to always, always have the focus be on love for each other and understanding among all members of the family. A good way to achieve this is in building family unity among family members.
