Summer Activites For Kids
Despite the fact that kids count down the entire school year for summer vacation, there are days during the summer break that refuse to add up to the exciting summer that has been anticipated. It is during these times that having ideas ready for "bored" kids can help to stop wasting the priceless days of summer.
It is important for kids to have structure even during the summer. Kids experience a structured environment during school and by continuing that habit of daily structure they will be more productive as well has have an easier transition into the new school year.
Parents may not necessarily choose to include academic activities as part of their daily summer routine; however, it is a good idea to have kids spend their time doing something other than sitting in front of the television day after day. A typical summer should include all or some of the following:
Household Chores or Summer Jobs
Of course this is wide open in its application. Obviously the number of chores or employment will depend on age and ability. However, it is a good idea that kids take part in activities that are productive and that are considered more as work than fun. This will accomplish two things. It will teach good work ethic and a balance between fun and responsibility and will also cause them to enjoy their free time much more.
Physical Activity
With childhood obesity on the rise it is more important tha ever for children to get exercise everyday. It could be as simple as playing a game of basketball or running through the sprinklers, or swimming with friends at the city pool. Whatever activity your child prefers it is important that they maintain a habit of daily exercise.
Rotating Activity Groups
This is a great idea for children in the same neighborhood or circle of friends. Typically, a parent or other adult of one of the children takes their turn planning the activity for the group to participate in. This may be done every week, every other week, or monthly. Activities could include making a craft, learning to cook, or visiting a museum. This allows children to participate in fun, meaningful activities. It also lets parents be involved without feeling the stress of constantly coming up with new ideas to entertain their children.
Looking Foward
It is a good idea for the family to plan one or more special outing. Depending on finances and location families may plan to visit a theme park or even go to the lake of the beach. It may be as simple as ice cream and seeing a fun family movie together at the theatre. Whatever the activity is, it is always helpful to have something to look forward to that will help maintain excitement throughout the summer vacation.
