Many Are Now Doing It
The number of families in America choosing to do home school continues to grow each year and now totals more than 1.4 million kids. So why are families choosing to home school? What are the benefits home school can offer?
Is It Successful?
Home schoolers have consistently scored at or above students at public schools on standardized tests. The parent is able to give more one on one time compared to a teacher who has many more students per class room. The parent knows the teaching needs along with knowing the student on a personal level.
Some students are "late bloomers" or are a little slower learning. When parents home school, each of these needs can be taken into consideration when deciding the curriculum you are going to be teaching. Home school curriculum can vary more, so make sure to take a look at all the choices to decide which is best for your student.
When you are teaching home school you are able to provide safety for your child at all times, whether it be physical or emotional. Bullying is a big problem in our school systems today and can make the child feel isolated, angry, or misunderstood. When you are teaching your child at home you are able to reinforce his/her self-esteem and family bonds while teaching him/her school curriculum.
A lot of times when kids enter the school system they encounter many things they wouldn't if they were being home schooled. They could be around students who can have a negative effect on them. Some people think that people who are home schooled are "socially awkward", but in most cases this is not true. Studies show that students who are being home schooled usually do about 5.2 social activities outside of the home each week. They are doing ballet, soccer, football, gymnastics, etc. They are still having the chance to make friends with those outside of their homes and have a social life as well. They are doing it without a lot of the negatives a public school system can have.
Kids who are home schooled are a lot more likely to draw their social primary identity from a membership in their family than from a group at public school. Kids being home schooled have a lot closer connection and feel like they are getting the attention and interaction from their parents that is needed.
The home schooling process is a learning process for both the parent and student. As a parent, you will feel like you have achieved a lot when you see your child's accomplishments. You know that you have had some part in their achievements and have done your best to give them a better future.
