Finances: Budgeting Advice for Newly Weds

Marriage is most certainly a life changing experiences. This is especially true regarding the question of the new couple's finances. Whether a couple is relatively young and between the two of them have relatively few assets or funds or perhaps the happy coupled married a little later after progressing in their career to the point where both are financially stable, finances are a vital aspect that must be planned out and discussed.

Marriage will bring change and adaptation to what each is used to. Family finances in its simplest form as it relates to habits can be grouped into three different categories: income, spending, and saving.

Income

Generally every family has a different level of income. To be sure there are factors such as education and location that determine a family's income; however, other important factors must be decided upon. One such decision is whether there will be two incomes or just one. This decision along with all others should be discussed openly and carefully until both can agree on a decision. Once that is decided upon, the family will have a fairly good idea of what their monthly budget will be.

Spending

Once a family determines a budget, the next step is deciding what expenses will be incurred. Most importantly which expenses are necessary and which fall under the "want" category. Once an income and expense total is determined a family then can form a family budget. When there are big purchases to be made the husband and wife should together, review their budget and decide if they are able to justify the purchase and if their monthly family budget will allow the purchase to be made.

It should be mentioned that wise couples spend their money together - there should be no secrets concerning the spending of money. So many couples fall into trouble when one or both spend money on lavish items without the other knowing. Unfortunately, this is where many couples' arguments stem from. It should be decided from day one that the spending of money will be thought out and never done in secret.

Savings

Lastly, but certainly important is the topic of family savings. Having a savings account is crucial for all families, especially those families that find themselves on a tight monthly budget. Having funds available for emergencies and unexpected expenses can be the difference a family maintaining a strong financial footing and a family having to incur debt or as with many families, having to go further into debt than they already find themselves.

In today's world, it is vital that all couples consistently review and revise, if necessary, the family budget. Money is a very important aspect in marriage and if handled correctly, can bring security and even happiness to the couple.
