Easy ways to go green
You don't have to turn off the electricity and power and live by candle light to go green in your household. In fact, it may be much easier than you think to go green. We have a few simple tips to offer you and your family to save money and to also do your part in helping to save the environment.
Plant a few trees
As simple as it may sound, planting a few trees in key spots around the outside of your home can cut about $100-200 dollars off your annual heating/cooling bill. Not only do trees help ease your pocket book, they also add beauty to your home. Trees are relatively inexpensive; you will also be money ahead when your heating/cooling bills begin to decline. Visit your local nursery for advice and tips on which trees will thrive in your area.
Recycle
Most families drink some sort of beverage from an aluminum can. Instead of throwing the cans away, start simply throwing the cans in cardboard box. Collect them for about a month, and at the end of the month take the cans down to your local recycling company. In most areas, you will get a bit of money back for your hard work! This will give you more soda money, and the recycling fun can begin again. Remember to recycle newspapers, paper shopping bags, and phone books as well. A little bit of effort can go a long ways!
Turn the air down
Turning the thermostat up just two degrees from where you normally keep it can save approximately 24 kilowatt hours a month which may not sound like a lot, but definitely adds up over months and years.
Also, you may consider investing into a programmable thermostat. The beauty in this is that you can keep the air off when no one is at home, and then set it to turn on about a half hours before the family arrives home. This can help save not only energy, but money as well. Programmable thermostats can be purchased at your local hardware store and range from about $100-200.
Seal the leaks
You may not know it, but there are sneaky energy leaks that can take place all throughout the house. Caulk over cracks and holes around windows and outdoor walls. Carefully check around plumbing pipes, dryer vents, bathtub and sink drains, and even telephone wires. Invest in weather stripping if you have drafty doors. These are just a few tips in considering when going green in the home. There are so many easy ways to go green and save a few dollars in the home. Commit to trying a few of these tips today!
