Save Money By Planting A Garden
We all are aware of the rise in cost for just about everything. Food is certainly no exception. Having the ability to grow your own garden can, in the long run, save a substantial amount of money, especially money spent on fresh produce. Before plating a garden, it is important to consider a few factors. It can make somewhat of a difference depending on what part of the country you live on how well your garden will produce. For example, those that live in the southwest have a much more arid climate that takes more culinary water to raise a garden then it does for someone living in the Midwest.
Also, the growing season might be substantially shorter for those living in upper Montana than for those living in Georgia or Florida. These factors may be a consideration before planting your garden. However, wherever you live, planting and maintaining a garden is possible and can save families hundreds of dollars per year on groceries. We will discuss three tips that will help in being efficient with the home garden.
Use Seeds
Whenever possible try and use seeds. Buying seeds instead of starter plants will save a large expense. If proper care and attention is given to seeds, they can be just as successful as starter plants and can even be stored for several months before planting.
Bottling
One huge benefit of a garden is that you can bottle excess produce for the months ahead. Depending on the size of one's garden in relation to their family, quite often there will be more produce than a family can eat. Having the ability to bottle extra fruit and vegetables will allow your family to eat this produce from the garden all year round.
This can save money as produce not in season tends to cost more. Being able to bottle produce can go a long way in creating food storage to be used during lean times. It should also be noted that bottling is a simple procedure that does not cost a lot and the actual process takes only a few hours.
Plant A Variety
Having a variety of produce to choose from will allow one to use the produce on a daily basis. For example, if a family only plants tomatoes, they may become tired of constantly eating tomatoes, even if it is a favorite. Often times this leads to the wasting of produce, which defeats the whole purpose in having a garden.
A variety of fruits and vegetables will much more likely be used on a daily basis. If done correctly, a garden can save money while providing a rewarding work experience for the whole family.
