Three Ways Exercise Is Beneficial

Exercise is a component of an overall healthy lifestyle. Many believe that exercise is crucial for a person's physical health. That is true. However, exercise is much more beneficial to our health than just physical condition. We will discuss three ways that exercise is beneficial to our health.

Physical

It is obvious that exercise is important to one's physical health. Our bodies were made to be in motion, not to be sitting around all day. Our body needs physical movement and work to function properly. Exercise can affect our metabolism. When we exercise and eat healthy our metabolism can speed up and burn off excess calories and fat that our body usually will store during inactivity.

It is also beneficial to our immune system as well as to our circulatory system. Consistent cardio exercise helps to prevent heart disease and other cardiac problems. Exercise also helps us feel like we have more energy. Research shows that those who exercise are less likely to contract illnesses compared to those who do not exercise. Exercise benefits not only our physical appearance, but also our internal bodily functions.

Emotional

The world we are now living in is more fast paced than ever before. Stress is felt by everyone, especially during this difficult financial time we are experiencing. One of the greatest stress relievers that we have available is physical exercise. Exercise helps regulate our body chemically by releasing endorphins which helps improve our mood and overall outlook on life.

This allows us to cope with the stress we all feel in our everyday life. By including exercise in our daily routine we will be happier and healthier and less likely to experience an overload emotionally. Depression is a disorder that affects many Americans today. It is proven that daily exercise consisting of thirty minutes or more can not only help those with depression, but in many cases helps to cure the feelings of depression.

Mental

Any marathon runner will tell you that being able to run 26.2 miles is as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. Setting exercise goals and working hard to achieve them creates a mental toughness that will serve one well in all other areas of their life. Learning the principles of hard work, determination, and self discipline will carry over into one's professional and personal relationships and challenges. With so many benefits of exercise, it would be foolish to not participate in some form of it. Exercise does not have to have to be a chore. Pick something that you are interested in or like to do. Exercise could consist of thirty minutes or more of the following:

  • hiking
  • biking
  • running/jogging
  • walking
  • dancing
  • intense housework/yardwork
