Food Storage Tips

If you turn on the television and watch the news it won't take long to realize that the world is in commotion at least to some degree. Between an increase in natural disasters, seismic events, and extremes stresses o our natural power grids, it isn't unrealistic to anticipate a real need for food storage and perhaps more certain a 72 hour kit.

For those who may not know what a 72 hour kit is, we will explain the key components. A 72 hour home kit is designed to provide a portable kit that contains important immediate needs such as food, water, and cooking materials. In addition a 72 hour kit should contain additional items such as flash lights, portable radios, water filters, extra batteries, and of course, toilet paper.

The 72 hour kit is to be portable so that in the event a family has to leave their home to find safety the can carry their supplies with them. What exactly is contained within a family's 72 hour kit will vary depending on each individual family and their specific needs. To be able to create a checklist we will list different key areas of focus.

Food

The first area of focus for a family 72 hour kit is food. Although it may be pretty straight forward, it is important to remember to include non-perishable items that can remain in your kit for up to one year. Also, it is wise to include food that has a high nutritional value or a high caloric value. This will ensure that the limited supply you carry will give you the most energy.

MRE's are a great option. Each MRE has thousands of calories. How3ever, some people can't stomach the taste and consistency. That is one reason why each family should take a little time to plan out what will be added to the food supply in their family's 72 hour kit.

Cooking Materials

Depending on what is chosen by the family to eat, their will be a need for cooking and a heating source. Whether a family chooses to include a portable backpacking stove or a large burner, it is a vital part of their kit. It is important to include eating utensils and any other cooking utensils such as can openers.

Medical

It is wise to have certain medical supplies set aside for those family members who have specific conditions such as a blood sugar testing for diabetes. It is also a good idea to have some basic medicine such as pain relievers or fever reducers. Allergy medications such as Benadryl and stomach medicines are important as well. In addition it would be wise to include a first aid kit and sunscreen.

Toiletries

It is also a good idea to include extra toothbrushes, razors, soap, feminine hygiene products, diapers, and wipes in a 72 hour kit. Also, extra contacts/glasses. By planning ahead and packing a 72 hour kit before a disaster, families will be better prepared to face whatever comes their way.
