Four Inexpensive Weekend Family Activities

With many families right now, budgets are tight. Recreation money is either nonexistent or at the very least in short supply. Families need to be much more creative in their choice of weekend activities. Money doesn't always have to equal fun. Families that plan ahead can have a great time and make lasting memories even if their budget is limited. There are many ideas for inexpensive weekend activities. We will discuss three ideas that have become a few of the more popular possibilities.

Go To The Park

Most cities have a city park that caters to families. This is especially popular with families that have young children. Many of the parks have playground equipment that can be fun for kids. For families with older children, parks typically have open spaces to either fly a kite or throw a Frisbee or football. Parks are also a great place for a picnic. The best part about public parks is that there are no entry fees and they are always open and available.

Hiking And Camping

For those families that live near the outdoors and state and national parks, going hiking as a family is a great, inexpensive activity. Getting outdoors is a break from the norm and if cell phones and ipods are left in the car, there are no distractions that will isolate family members from each other. Many of the state parks offer campsites for overnight camping. These campsites often will offer bathrooms, water, and in some cases, showers. Experiencing nature as a family is also something that will create lasting memories.

Visiting The Lake

Depending on where one lives, going to a nearby lake can be a fun and inexpensive family activity. There are many different things to do at a lake that cost very little. Fishing is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy. It is a relaxing experience that is slow paced and allows for conversation. It is important to check with state authorities for a fishing license and other rules and regulations. Another idea while at the lake is simply swimming or cliff jumping, or picnicking on the beach.

Prepare A Family Dinner

This could be a fun activity that might be a bit different than cooking a regular meal during the week. The family could decide on the theme for the night, and then cook a meal and even plan an activity centered on the theme. For example, the theme for Saturday night could be "under the sea".

The menu would consist of anything seafood (fish and chips, salmon, shrimp, tuna fish sandwiches, etc.) with some sort of creative dessert (a mermaid-shaped cake is always a fun one). The activity could consist of watching an ocean-based movie (Disney's "Little Mermaid" or "Splash"). This would be a fun, exciting night that takes place at home, and doesn't do much damage to the pocketbook. It would also be very memorable.
