5 Tips To Be A Better Parent
People sometimes ask how they can be a better parent. That certainly isn't an easy question to answer. It also can't be answered with a two sentence response. There are a couple of tips to consider when trying to be a better parent that hopefully will help in the future.
1- Every Child Is Different
This may seem overly obvious , however, it is important to consider that parents can't treat all their children the same. Each child is motivated by different things and responds differently to punishment and responsibility. Understanding that you as a parent need to adapt to each child in the style of parenting applied will pay great dividends down the road both to you and your child.
2- Communication
Having good communication with your child is the goal, but just having an open line to communication may be where you need to put your focus. Once you have established communication remember that communication is a two way street, meaning your child needs to feel like they have the opportunity to speak and give their opinion. That in turn means that you, as the parent, need to listen actively without judging or immediately trying to fix or change what you are hearing.
3- Gain Trust With Your Child
Gaining trust with your child will help them feel more comfortable in opening up while talking as well as confirming that what you say you will follow through on. Gaining trust with your children is a vital key in having a good relationship with them.
4- Don't Expect Perfection
Sometimes parents get caught up in pushing their kids to achieve certain results. When this is done, parents often will lose sight of what is best for their children or at least they don't take into consideration what their children want or are interested in. It is important to encourage and at times push children, but not at the expense of their ultimate happiness.
5- Be There
The last and probably the most fundamental and important tip would be to simply be there. Let them know that you are interested in what they are involved in and what they are thinking. If they know they can count on you for support they will surprise you in how much they really want to please you and make you proud of them. Hopefully these tips along with a lot of patience and hard work will help to improve not only your ability to be a better parent, but also in helping you establishing better communication with your child. Then ultimately the goal will be to have a better relationship made of trust and understanding as well as a set of clear expectations.
