Choosing A Family Dog
Dogs are a very popular choice for a family pet. Anyone who knows much about dogs realizes that dogs, much like people, have different personality traits and physical characteristics that can widely differ from breed to breed. Understanding a few basic areas that help determine which type of dog will best suit the family will ensure a long and enjoyable relationship with the family pet.
Size Of The Dog
When choosing a particular breed for a family pet one of the first areas of focus would be the size of the dog. A family should consider several factors relating to the size of their pet. First, is their home a large enough area for the dog to live? The larger the dog the more room they will occupy, not only indoors, but most importantly outdoors. Larger dogs need an area to run and move around.
For example, if one lives in a studio apartment with no yard, having a Great Dane in the home will undoubtedly cause a few challenges not the least of which will be cleaning up after a dog that size. Of course, it is up to the owner ultimately to decide about these certain challenges.
Grooming/Maintenance
Another area to consider when choosing a family dog is grooming and maintenance needs. Some families would prefer a dog that is lower maintenance. For example, some breeds of dogs have hair and some dogs have fur. Dogs that have hair shed more than the others which can be left on clothes, furniture, and carpets.
When these dogs shed it can leave quite a mess. Whatever breed of dog a family chooses they will enjoy the company of their family pet. Dogs have traditionally always been considered the best companion to their owners, thus earning the nickname of "man's best friend". It is important to consider closely a few of these areas to ensure a happy, healthy relationship between dog and family.
