How Does The New Healthcare Bill Affect My Family?

The new healthcare bill that was passed early in 2010 has been racked with controversy ever since it was first introduced. It has quickly become a major political issue due to the fact that it will have far reaching affects for each and every American family as well as essentially turning the health insurance industry upside down.

In this article we will focus on what is stated in the bill and how it will affect families as it relates to healthcare in general. We will not attempt to explain how it will be paid for or other hot political topics. Beginning in the fall of 2010, your health insurance provider will no longer be able to cancel coverage or "drop" coverage. They are required by law to maintain current coverage. Also, beginning this year insurance companies will not be able to deny children coverage due to a preexisting health condition.

Conditions such as diabetes will have to be accepted and given coverage. This is applicable for adults as well beginning in 2014. In addition, adult children that are still dependent financially on their parents will be able to remain on their parents policy until the age of twenty-six. Currently the age is nineteen or if the child leaves for school. Also, according to the new law, starting in 2014 it will be mandatory for each citizen to be covered with health insurance. If health insurance coverage is not obtained by 2014, fines will be imposed. These fines will be based on an individual income and will range from 1% of an individuals yearly income to a maximum of 2.5 % of an individual's yearly income.

There will also be no cap on the amount of coverage. In the past, if an individual developed a second health condition that would involve on-going treatments, health insurance companies could put a cap on how much they would pay out. Under the new bill insurance companies will be required to continue paying out to cover those costs. The items discussed are but a few, but some of the more important points found in the new health care bill that would directly affect families in America. It is important that we as Americans do our homework and become educated on the matter of the new healthcare bill. There seems to be pros and cons surrounding the new healthcare bill. Knowledge is everything, especially when dealing with new governmental polices and plans that have the ability to affect us, our children, our children's children, and so forth.
