Three Study Tips For Teens
The pace of life in our society seems to be getting faster and faster with more demand on our time than ever before. This proves true among teenagers in their high school experience with activities such as athletics, student council, drama club, dance, and cheerleading. Many times students find it difficult to make time for their studies. This seems to present an imbalance in priorities, however.
Regardless of a student's schedule, the time that they have to study needs to be utilized well and students need the skills to maximize their efforts with the time they have to spend. We will discuss three basic tips for students to make the most of their study time to ensure that have the best chance for success.
Create A Proper Study Environment
Having a proper study environment is crucial for a student to be able to concentrate on the task at hand. There are several areas of focus that will help create a proper environment.
- First, a student needs an organized study area. Whether a student is studying at home, at school, or at a local library, having a clean and organized study area is important. The study area should be void of clutter and objects that are not part of the study material. This will help to avoid distraction during study time. Also, the chair should not be overly comfortable. Avoid lazy-boys which make it easy for students to become relaxed and lose focus on the task. This may sound extreme, however, studies show that students perform better when sitting at a desk or workstation and a hard surfaced chair.
- In addition to a proper work area, the environment should be a quiet area away from noise and distractions. Many students make the mistake of trying to study at the family kitchen table. With traffic from family members in and out it is easy to become distracted.
- Some people prefer to study with background music. If so, the music should not be kept at a loud volume and should not fast beat of tempo, but should be soft music. Classical music is the most popular form of study music.
Time To Study
It is important that students block out a certain amount of time for study. Students shouldn't try to break up study sessions into anything less than thirty minutes. Many subjects will require at least an hour. Breaking up study sessions harbors lack of concentration and focus.
Avoid Ineffective Study Groups
It is easy for friends in a particular class to want to form a study group. However, many times it becomes a social get together more than a study group. Social time and study time should be kept separate. Avoid groups that aren't serious about their study time.
