Is My Teenager Using Drugs

Drug abuse among teens has become so common that many parents worry for their teen, but lack the knowledge of what signs to look for and what the common drug abuse practices are for those teens that are abusing drugs. During the course of this article we will discuss the definition of drug or substance abuse, common drug abuse practices, and the various types of substances that are commonly abused.

What is drug abuse?

Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, involves repeated and excessive use of chemical substances. These substances give different effects to the user, effects that can become addictive and dangerous. Some of the effects of drug abuse include powerful charges of energy while others give a feeling of relaxation and calmness. Prescription drugs are also becoming commonly used and abused to give the user a high, yet calm sensation. Drug abuse is sadly affecting all ages and backgrounds of individuals.

Which kinds of drugs are being abused?

There is a growing trend among teens to abuse prescription drugs. In fact, a recent study found that in the past year, abuse of prescription drugs now ranks second--only behind marijuana - as the Nation's most prevalent illegal drug problem. It seems that prescription drugs are becoming increasingly easy to buy and purchase because of such things as online pharmacies. Teens simply need a credit card and a home address to order these dangerous drugs via the Internet.

Teens also may not need to go any further than their parent's own medicine cabinet to get their hands on prescription drugs. In addition to the popular traditional illicit drugs and prescription drugs, the term "substance" is also broad in definition due to the fact that some teens will use household products to achieve their "high". From paint thinners to the fumes from household glues, teens are using a wide range of chemical substances. It is vital that parents look for the warning signs of teen drug abuse. Once a drug problem is identified, immediate action is necessary.

Drug abuse and help

Whichever type of drug abuse a person is involved with, there is always help. A strong, loving support system is one of the most important components in helping and individual cope with and heal from a drug problem. Open communication is vital. Listening without lecturing may be easier said than done, but teens must know that they can come to their parents without continual criticism.

Therapy is also a vital key in recovering from drug abuse. Highly skilled counselors and therapists may hold the keys in saving teens from their drug abuse. It is important that therapy plays an active role in helping a teen with his/her drug problem.
